While working on trophy properties across the U.S., she realized she was fascinated by the design of hotels, so she obtained her Professional Certificate from the UCLA Extension Architecture and Interior Design program. A collaborative project with Magnum’s Steve McCurry, the exhibit featured artwork by a collective of photographers—Alex Webb, Newsha Tavakolian Trent Parke, Olivia Arthur, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Cristina de Middel, Nanna Heitmann—selected for the way they capture the many shades of the human condition. Unexpectedly, the images suspended in silky and translucent materials to evoke the sun’s universal appeal as well as tease us to read these images in unexpected ways. There were more subtle surrealist moments elsewhere with materials, color and shape playing tricks with the mind. Californian designer Yves Béhar’s Peaks for furniture brand MOOOI, for instance, is a modular sofa composed of dual triangles interconnected by fabric hinges, which allows them to rotate up or down to create multiple seating arrangements. While Faye Toogood created an intriguing space for Tacchini at Rude Arts Club with her irregular and elliptical shapes, sculptural elements mixed with delicate softness, which blended the British designer’s quirky spirit with fine Italian craftsmanship.

These haute couture furniture collections will showcase Sozzi’s own designs, including the small Battisti tables, which are a tribute to the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. “Meraviglioso & Meravigliosa” will also welcome the work of Pritzker Prize–winning architect Álvaro Siza, who created three of the pieces of the collection. During design week, Laura Urbinati will partner with floral artist Dylan Tripp to decorate the brand’s headquarters in Viale Col di Lana. The green project will be on display from Monday to Friday and Tripp will use nature as a raw material, combined with the brand’s archival fabrics, to transform the space into an innovative and experimental Garden of Eden creating small botanical worlds based on a modern floral aesthetic.

Series 08 comprises 100 limited-edition capes-anoraks developed in tandem with three industrial partners, crafted from multiaxial and flexible materials, including linen and a non-woven textile, which are then inkjet-printed and treated with a double lamination of aliphatic polyurethan coating. The outerwear is intended for protective and performance use in such fields as automotive and boating, among other sports. The installation features two areas, an art-like display of 32 capes opposite a video wall giving an abstract interpretation of the collaboration and development process behind the series.

Elsewhere, Dutch solar designer Marjan van Aubel proposed a future where solar energy is holistically embedded in the design process, rather than an afterthought add-on. Working with Lexus, her 8 Minutes and 20 Seconds installation took a life-size model of LF-ZC electric concept car, sliced into 11 transparent sheets, while energy was sourced from solar power captured by organic photovoltaic cells and stored in built-in batteries. The car’s color changed as the sun charged the battery, all to the natural sounds of rustling bamboo and the sun, based on sounds collected by Nasa. Elsewhere designers continued delving into the potentials of artificial intelligence in design and production.

Inside Palazzo San Fedele, which is slated to become the new Bottega Veneta headquarters starting in September 2024, visitors could see stacks of Le Corbusier’s cabanon stools, crafted in Bottega Veneta’s signature leatherwork and designed in a special charred-wood technique that draws on traditional Japanese methods. Each piece was meticulously enveloped in Bottega Veneta’s Intreccio foulard technique, meticulously hand-woven at the House’s artisanal atelier in Montebello, near Vicenza. Saint Laurent Rive Droite’s pavilion in the cloisters of San Simpliciano was a nod to Gio Ponti’s historic modernist architecture in Caracas. Curated by creative director Anthony Vaccarello for Milan Design Week 2024, the exhibition showcased a custom tableware collection originally conceived by the Italian architect and designer in 1953 for the Venezuelan Villa Planchart, alongside a collection of archives. In collaboration with Ginori 1735, Saint Laurent reintroduced twelve original plates from the Villa Planchart Segnaposto collection. Crafted using traditional techniques and enveloped with motifs nodding to the architectural design, the decorative porcelain plates were meticulously hand-painting at Ginori 1735’s Italian factory, preserving the essence of Ponti’s visionary design.
Working with the Italian furniture maker Kartell, his A.I Lounge and A.I Console use recycled plastic for an interesting dialogue on materials and production. The Aliita Castle will land at 10 Corso Como to bring a fairytale vibe to the concept store. The installation will coincide with the drop of a new jewelry collection designed by Cynthia Vilchez Castiglioni, who launched the Aliita brand in 2015. In sync with the playful ethos of the label and the Western wave that is currently trending across fashion, music and pop culture, the range will include gold chains with enameled pendants shaped as horses, cowboy boots and hats.
